While some companies are still cutting down on the number of workers they employ in this less-than-perfect economic market, Honda has increased its workforce by adding a second shift of production to the Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC auto plant. Growing to its full potential of 200k-unit annual capacity, Honda has hired an additional 1,000 associates. The Indiana plant has consistently earned outstanding merits such as the Platinum Award for quality based on the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Initial Quality Survey - one of the only three automobile plants in the world to do so.
Because of its success, in October 2011, the Indiana plant began very special production of the 2012 Civic Natural Gas, the only U.S.-made natural gas vehicle for sale in America. Jun Nishimoto, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana's President, comments on the state of Honda expansion: "We are taking an important step forward in the realization of our dream," he explains, "Our associates have made this one of the highest quality plants in the world, and now we have the opportunity to share their commitment to excellence with even more Honda customers. It's a great day for Honda in Indiana."1
Honda's expansion will not only add jobs in the state of Indiana. A ripple effect will increase the need for jobs in the 225 Civic auto parts companies in the U.S. and Canada, including suppliers in Michigan, Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, and Ohio- to name a few. Honda has seven auto plants in North America, four of which are in the U.S. These plants have the capacity to build 1.63-million automobiles.
